Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded just 3:30 p.m. Monday to report of a small plane crash at the end of a runway at Schaumburg Airport, 905 E. Irving Park Road.

The plane took off just after 3:30 p.m. and was in the air a short time before crashing into a grassy area next to the runway.

Authorities say the pilot was a 66-year-old man, William Borgstrom, who was pronounced dead at the scene after his two-seat 1946 Luscombe stalled on takeoff at 3:30 p.m. The plane’s left wing dipped. Then the plane spun 180 degrees and fell to the ground. He was removed from the aircraft by Schaumburg Fire Department and pronounced dead at the scene. There was spilled fuel at the scene surrounding the aircraft.

Positive identification and notification of relatives is pending. The aircraft tail number is N71823.

Federal Aviation Administration officials and Illinois State police are investigating the crash.
