Chicago police and Chicago firefighters and paramedics responded about 2:11 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2018 to a report that a piece of equipment fell or that a person fell from scaffolding from the high-rise building at the northeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street. First responders discovered that a person was hit by debris.

One person was injured after debris fell from a downtown building just northwest of Millennium Park, which also caused the closure of Michigan Avenue to both vehicles and pedestrians.

The City of Chicago reported that Michigan Avenue was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic between Randolph Street and Lake Street due to an “Incident with a Building please avoid the area if possible.”

Police said a piece of building equipment detached from support cables and fell to the ground on Michigan Avenue. In addition to the injury, seven vehicles were reported damaged.

Officials said work was in progress to secure the building equipment and clear the debris from the street.

The victim hit by debris was transported by paramedics to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and listed in stable condition, and the emergency incident was under command of Chicago Fire Department Battalion 1 and Engine 13..

The affected building is known as the Crain communications Building, the”Diamond Building” or the Smurfit-Stone Building — a 49-story building constructed from 1982 to 1983 and owned by CBRE Global Investors. The skyscraper has 41 floor of tenant space
