Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Highland Park responded about 7:35 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2026 to a report of a shooting in the block of 300 Walker Avenue in Highland Park’s north side near Highwood. The gunshot victim, identified as a 30-year-old male, received emergency medical treatement at the scene and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Preliminary hospital reports indicate that his condition is improving, according to the City of Highland Park.
The City of Highland Park activated a shelter-in-place that was in effect for the immediate vicinity of the 300-block of Walker Ave until just after 10:30 p.m.
Police officers continued working Monday night in the area as the investigation continued. Highland Park police officers and detectives, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, and area law enforcement agencies working mutual aid conducted a thorough search, including the use of K-9s and drones.
When evidence indicated that the offenders fled the area, the Shelter in Place was de-activated at 10:39 p.m.
The Highland Park Police Department is developing suspect information.
At 8:46 p.m., The City of Highland Park Police Department released images of two persons of interest in the July 20, 2026 shooting in the block of 3200 Walker Avenue in Highland Park. Investigators have identified both persons of interest, and both individuals are considered to be witnesses or potential suspects. The individuals were observed talking with the victim just prior to the shooting, according to the City of Highland Park. According to the Highland Park Police Department, the preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting was an incident that involved individuals known to each other.
The Highland Park Police Department requests any citizens that see these individuals make an immediate report of the observation by calling 911.
The crime scene was located on Walker Avenue just east of Waukegan Road, just east of downtown Highwood, and just east of the Highwood Metra train station.
