The crosswalk across Central Road is located just east of Weller Lane and just east of the Melas Park driveway about 800 feet east of Busse Road.
A 42-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a westbound vehicle while he was walking in a pedestrian crosswalk near Melas Park in Mount Prospect — just north of the crash scene.
The crash occurred about 8:53 p.m. on Central Road near Weller Lane and Melas Park, authorities said.
According to the Mount Prospect Police Department, a preliminary investigation indicated the man was walking northbound in the pedestrian crosswalk with yellow rapid flashing lights activated when a driver traveling westbound, stuck him with his vehicle.
The 62 year-old male driver of the vehicle, stopped at the scene, and was apparently cooperating with the police investigation.
Central Road was closed in both directions for about five hours while the Mount Prospect Police Department investigated the scene until about 2:41 a.m. Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Initially no charges or citations were applied to the driver of the vehicle.
There are three bright yellow signs warning of pedestrians and bicyclists at the crosswalk — one on each shoulder, and one in the median. There is a 10-foot wide concrete median with barrier protection from both directions.
In each direction, there is also a “STATE LAW” sign pointing to a STOP LINE before crosswalk.
Central Road is four lanes with two lanes eastbound and two lanes westbound. The Speed Limit on Central Road is 35 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images.
