An Arlington Heights male police officer is facing a nightmare scenario after reportedly misplacing his service weapon during a bathroom break at the Forest View Educational Center Monday afternoon, May 4, 2026.
The Inverse of an Anxiety Dream
A recurring nightmare that feels highly realistic because it reflects a waking anxiety and features credible life events (like losing a job due to your own uncharacteristic fault, forgetting to study and then failing a test, or causing a rear-end car accident, for example), is known as an Anxiety Dream or a Stress Dream. Unfortunately, a waking situation occurred for an Arlington Heights Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) Monday, May 4, 2026 that reflected such a type of Anxiety Dream when the officer’s unholstered gun during a bathroom break was lost. It’s bad enough when you lose any property. It’s much worse when that property is a gun.
Missing Service Gun
The incident has caused much concern in the community. For example, neighbors of the Forest View Educational Center, who accompanied their children at a nearby school bus stop for their elementary school, expressed concern and anxiety to CARDINAL NEWS regarding the danger resulting from the police officer’s service weapon likely in the hands of a rogue actor, and that the incident was so close to home. Adults at a nearby school bus stop Tuesday morning said they did not know Monday night when they went to bed what had happened Monday at Forest View Educational Center. One middle school student knew there was a “security issue” at the Forest View Educational Center” only because a sibling is a student at Forest View, and that sibling was provided limited information (didn’t know there was a gun involved). Even Tuesday morning there were several individuals that were not aware what had happened at Forest View.
There was no realtime alert, and no awareness of what had happened at Forest View Educational Center during the initial critical hours of the incident because of a multi-factored serving of ignorance by the Village of Arlington Heights …
#1) News media providers were unaware that anything had happened because the Village of Arlington Heights police radios are encrypted;
#2) the modus operandi of the Village of Arlington Heights provided no alternative for realtime situational awareness when necessary to substitute for the publicly-silenced police radios; and to make matters worse …
#3) the Village of Arlington Heights under the authority of Village Manager Randy Recklaus and Police Chief Nicholas Pecora (under the office pecking orders of Village Manager Randy Recklaus) didn’t provide any notification of the high risk incident until after midnight — about nine hours after the danger and risk was discovered.
In other words, after the police officer’s action that involved a lapse in his responsibility, the police officer acted responsibly and immediately reported the misplacement of his service weapon. Then the Village of Arlington Heights acted irresponsibly by failing to provide emergency notification to neighbors and Arlington Heights residents for a duration of about eight hours.
In a press release, the Village of Arlington Heights did not provide the precise time of recognition of the missing weapon, and did not provide a precise time when the investigation and response actions were initiated. According to the District 214 website, the Academy at Forest View dismissal is at 2:50 p.m. with the end of 8th period (bell schedule).
According to the notification from the Arlington Heights Police Department that was released after midnight when most people were asleep, an Arlington Heights Police Officer assigned as a School Resource Officer (SRO) to the Forest View Educational Center reported his service weapon missing. The police officer removed his firearm from his duty holster while utilizing the restroom just prior to school dismissal. We do not know whether the police officer was feeling unwell when he was using the bathroom, or whether the bathroom utilized was a student bathroom or a staff-only bathroom. According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the officer realized the firearm was missing shortly after students were dismissed for the day. Upon searching the restroom, the firearm could not be located. Hallway surveillance images were immediately reviewed, which determined that a limited number of persons entered the restroom. The use of the word “persons” by the police department does not specify whether the individuals were students or staff or both. Notification of a firearm theft was made to school and police officials, according to the police department.
Arlington Heights Police K9s supplemented by Cook County Sheriff’s Police and Palatine Police K9 units conducted an extensive search of the school building and grounds Monday afternoon and evening. K9s trained specifically for weapon detection were utilized in the search. The K9 search did not reveal the presence of a firearm. Based on the length of time necessary to complete a thorough search and out of an abundance of caution, school administration made the determination to cancel Tuesday, May 5, 2026 classes for the specialized schools at Forest View. School officials messaged families and staff.
Detectives are conducting a detailed investigation into the location of the stolen firearm. In the police press release, the Arlington Heights Police Department stated that the department “takes this matter very seriously and intends to dedicate all necessary resources toward the recovery of the firearm and individual(s) responsible. We understand the community’s obvious concerns regarding a matter of this magnitude. Additional uniformed police presence will be present at the Forest View campus Tuesday, May 5, 2026 and coming days. The Police Department will continue to work collaboratively with school officials to ensure the safety of all students and staff.”
“We are committed to remaining accountable for our actions as an organization and taking responsibility for the frustration and anger this incident caused within our school community. While the Police Department pursues active investigative leads, we ask any member of the community with information regarding this subject to contact detectives at (847) 368-5300.
The Police Department will provide an update when significant details become available.”— Arlington Heights Police Dept.
The Arlington Heights Police Department indicated regret for “this unfortunate and embarrassing incident”. According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the police department will conduct a comprehensive review pursuant to applicable policy.
Some students that attend Forest View Educational Center are not eligible to attend their home high school because they have not attained a behavioral rating that allows eligibility to attend their home high school, or they have disciplinary issues that exclude them from their home high school in District 214.
One Subject in Custody
According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, police officers and detectives have narrowed the scope of the investigation to a small group of individuals connected to this case. One subject is currently in custody at the Arlington Heights Police Department and is cooperating with detectives. At this time, the Police Department is confident the stolen firearm was removed from the school grounds and there are no additional known threats. The Village and Police Department have been in close contact with school officials throughout the day, collaboratively sharing pertinent information related to the case and reviewing safety protocols.
The school district has made the decision to resume classes tomorrow, Wednesday, May 6th, 2026. The Police Department will provide dedicated uniformed police presence throughout the school day.
Safety protocols, including restricted access and metal detector screening will remain in place for all students arriving for class tomorrow.
Administrative Leave
According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the School Resource Officer has been placed on administrative leave pending a formal internal affairs investigation. The Police Department maintains a strict code of conduct and violations of policies and procedures are taken seriously. High ranking investigators assigned to conduct this review will be working closely with school officials to examine all aspects of this incident. A thorough assessment is a critical and necessary component to not only maintain a high level of accountability, but also ensure current guiding policy and procedures are effective.
