Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, Deerfield, Wheeling and other fire agencies were dispatched to a report of a crash of a small aircraft in the backyard of townhomes in the block of 800 Swallow Street in unincorporated Deerfield. Sheriff’s deputies along with Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District and several other fire agencies arrived and located a single-engine aircraft crashed behind a row of townhomes. The aircraft was significantly damaged, and the pilot had to be extricated from the aircraft.

The crash occurred during heavy fog conditions and was located three miles from the north end of Runway 16 at Chicago Executive Airport. The initial report indicates that the aircraft was on approach, with the pilot preparing to land at Chicago Executive Airport.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the aircraft appeared to be occupied by only the pilot, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The aircraft struck the roof-area of one of the townhomes as well as two gas meters. A small gas leak was discovered and was secured overnight. Nicor Gas officials were also assigned to the scene. ComEd was no required at the scene.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, it appears the pilot was able to avoid causing major damage to any of the homes. There were no reports of injuries on the ground. There is a large wooded area just north of the crash scene. A witness reported hearing the aircraft hitting the tops of trees before the aircraft crashed on the ground.
