Dozens of Minnesota mayors have signed onto a letter to state leaders, raising concerns about the rising costs and financial pressures cities are facing due to state mandates (KTSP 5 Eyewitness News). YouTube Tips ⓘ

In a letter addressed to Minnesota state representatives, senators, and Governor Tim Walz, and written by the mayor of Crosslake, Minnesota and signed by 97 other mayors across the state of Minnesota, the mayors expressed their “deep concern and growing frustration” with the direction the State of Minnesota is heading in decline.

Crosslake Mayor Jackson Purfeerst claimed that fraud, unchecked spending, and inconsistent fiscal management at the state level is making it more difficult for cities and towns to plan responsibly and continue offering core services to local taxpayers. Crosslake, Minnesota is located about 120 miles northwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul — the Twin Cities. St. Paul is the state capitol of Minnesota.

“Minnesotans watched an historic $18 billion in surplus disappear in a single biennium, only to now face an updated projected $2.9 billion−$3 billion deficit in the 2028-29 biennium. As mayors, we see firsthand how these decisions ripple outward.”

“As mayors, we are committed to responsible budgeting, fiscal restraint, and delivering high-quality local services. Yet there is a growing disconnect between state-level fiscal decisions and the strain they place on the cities we lead. When the state expands programs or shifts responsibilities without stable funding, it is our residents — families, sensiors, businesses, and workers — who ultimately bear the cost.”

— Crosslake Mayor Jackson Purfeerst
