Updates will be provided as they become available, according to the Rolling Meadows Police Department.

Three Rolling Meadows Police Department were on scene at Plum Grove Middle School, apparently as a precaution.

Also, tactical police vehicles and personnel are in the area due to an unrelated training exercise involving NIPAS — the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System organization, which consists of a joint venture of suburban municipal police departments in the Chicago metropolitan area designed to police actions such as hostage/barricade incidents, high-risk warrant service, major crime scene searches, search and rescue missions, dignitary protection, and similar tactical incidents. NIPAS personnel may also respond as a Mobile Field Force assigned to control unruly crowds (either hostile or passive); seal off problem areas, regardless of size; rescue citizens or officers from crowds; clear an area of hostile individuals by use of proactive tactics; and apprehend multiple offenders. The NIPAS headquarters is located near Plum Grove Middle School.

Plum Grove Middle School Families,

“I am writing to inform you of a serious incident that occurred today involving a student bringing a firearm to Plum Grove Middle School. First and foremost, I want to assure you that no students, staff members, community members, or anyone else were harmed.

This incident was addressed swiftly thanks to the vigilance of our school community, specifically the immediate response of PGMS building administrators and the Rolling Meadows Police Department. The weapon was secured and confiscated without incident, and the District is fully cooperating with law enforcement as they continue their thorough investigation.

In the event that your child is concerned about what happened, please reassure them that:

Plum Grove remains a safe place for students, our staff, and their families.

Building and District administration, along with local law enforcement, have addressed the immediate safety issue.

School safety is a shared responsibility. Today is a reminder of the importance of students and staff reporting any safety concerns so that they can be addressed right away.

Doing so reflects the importance of our “See Something, Say Something” practice – if you see, hear, or notice anything that feels unsafe or concerning, whether it’s in person or online, the best step is to immediately share it with a trusted adult or staff member so it can be addressed quickly.

As a reminder, District 15 utilizes both the Bullying/Safety Tip Line and the Safe2Help Illinois platforms, which allow anyone to submit an anonymous report at any time if they have a concern. In addition, we encourage all families to visit our Safe Gun Storage webpage, which provides important resources and reminders on responsible storage practices to help keep students and communities safe.

Due to student privacy laws, the District cannot provide further details regarding this incident beyond the information shared in this letter. If you have any further questions, please contact me directly at 847-963-7605 or [email protected].

We recognize that news of this nature can be unsettling, and we encourage you to talk with your children about their feelings and remind them that school staff and resources are always available to support them.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and support in keeping Plum Grove safe.”

Sincerely,

Faith Rivera, Principal
