When Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) attempted to stop the driver of a silver Subaru in front of Happy Nails, 9842 Grand Ave, in Franklin Park, Illinois, the driver of the Subaru fled, and eventually an ICE agent being dragged fatally shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez. During the attempt to stop his vehicle after Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez had allegedly tried to drive his sedan into a group of ICE agents. One of the agents was dragged by Villegas-Gonzalez’s vehicle while Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez was in the driver’s seat, and the agent being dragged shot Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez in the head.
During the attempted traffic stop, Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez’s vehicle crashed into a semi-trailer truck on the driver’s side. The Subaru was severely damaged.
Two surveillance videos captured different stages of the incident — one at a nearby nail salon located on the north side of Grand Avenue, and second at a location near the salon. The surveillance videos were retrieved and published by CBS Chicago. At least one surveillance camera captured the sound of two gunshots.
ICE agents were conducting a targeted law enforcement operation in the neighborhood when they attempted to stop Villegas-Gonzalez’s vehicle. Law enforcement authorities stated that Villegas-Gonzalez resisted arrest and drove his car toward the agents, striking one and dragging him a significant distance. According to law enforcement authorities, the agent who was dragged and fearing for his life, fired his weapon and shot Villegas-Gonzalez.
Both Villegas-Gonzalez and the injured agent were transported to a local hospital. Villegas-Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the hospital. The agent sustained “severe injuries” but was classified in “stable condition.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez as the driver, who had a history of reckless driving. He was also described by DHS as an undocumented migrant. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that FBI personnel were assisting local law enforcement with the investigation.
The ICE agents in the Chicago area were part of an ICE enforcement campaign known as “Operation Midway Blitz” announced by DHS on September 8, 2025. According to DHS, Operation Midway Blitz is conducted in honor of Katie Abraham, who was killed in a drunk driving hit-and-run car wreck in Illinois caused by criminal illegal alien Julio Cucul-Bols. According to DHS, the ICE operation is targeting criminal illegal aliens who flocked to Chicago and Illinois because they knew Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies would protect them, and allow them to roam free on American streets.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker issued a statement on X, calling the incident “troubling” and stating that Illinois residents deserved “a full, factual accounting of what’s happened”. Local community leaders and advocates voiced concern, with some community groups stressing the need for transparency.
In April 2025, JB Pritzker called for “mass protests, mobilization and disruption.” Gov. Pritzker said that “these Republicans cannot know a moment of peace” and predicted that “we will relegate their portraits to museum halls reserved for tyrants and traitors.”
