McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Believes They’ve Located Vehicle Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash with Teen Bicyclist

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office announced at 8:26 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2025 that law enforcement has located a vehicle believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run vehicle vs bicycle crash that occurred on Terra Cotta Road near Deering Oaks Lane between East Hillside Road and Old Westbury Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake on Wednesday night, July 2, 2025.

However, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for the hit-and-run driver who killed 15-year-old Nicholas Laureys as he rode his bike on the roadway near his family’s home in Crystal Lake Wednesday night, July 2, 2025. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office state that “at this time, there are no additional suspects and no charges have been filed.”

The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled the scene in a dark-colored reddish 2017-2018 Jeep Cherokee they assessed to have been involved in the crash.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit, the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are assigned to the case.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office stated that the bicycle was being operated with an activated red taillight when the bicycle and Nicholas Laureys were struck.
