Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders on NETFLIX, premiering tomorrow, may prove to be the best comprehensive television documentary coverage of the Tylenol Murders in Arlington Heights and Chicagoland in autumn 1982. The NETFLIX presentation is scheduled for release as a three-part docuseries on Monday, Memorial Day, May 26, 2025 at 2:00 a.m. CDT.
The docuseries features Michelle Rosen, daughter of a murder victim who may not have gotten her Tylenol from a store shelf; Helen Jensen, an Arlington Heights Village Nurse who was on the case; Arlington Heights Fire Department Fire Officer Chuck Kramer who was on the case, the one-story home in Arlington Heights where three victims were poisoned to death by Tylenol purchased in an Arlington Heights Jewel grocery store (Jewel-Osco merger was the following year in 1983), and many others, including investigators, politicians and a questionable prime suspect.
Helen Jensen was the first health care professional authority to indicate Tylenol as a suspected cause of the mysterious deaths. Elk Grove Village firefighter Richard Keyworth and Arlington Heights Lieut. Philip Cappitelli had been listening to their fire radio scanners while off-duty, and discussed the possible link after hearing Tylenol mentioned in each of their fire department’s radio communications. Arlington Heights Lieut. Philip Cappitelli mentioned the Tylenol link between Arlington Heights and Elk Grove Village to Arlington Heights Village Nurse Helen Jensen), and streamlined the investigation to Tylenol as a source. Some of the Tylenol capsules in the bottle at the Arlington Heights home where three victims were poisoned to death tested positive for deadly potassium cyanide. The public was warned not to take Tylenol, and the products were removed from shelves. The understanding of the source of the mysterious deaths, and the stop order on Tylenol may have saved many lives.
From directors Yotam Guendelman and Ari Pines (Shadow of Truth, Buried) and executive producer Joe Berlinger (Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, Conversations with a Killer), Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders is a gripping three-part docuseries that revisits a chilling crime that shattered the nation’s trust in the safety of everyday brands.
Chicagoland, 1982: at least seven people died after ingesting cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules, sparking nationwide panic and one of the largest criminal investigations in U.S. history. Is there one mastermind behind these horrific deaths, or is that simply a convenient scapegoat in a darker conspiracy and potential cover-up? The series reopens the case that turned the world’s best-selling drug into a terrifying symbol—and changed forever how we view the products in our own medicine cabinets.
“The investigation was problematic from the start.”
Have more people died from cyanide poisoning … that has not been understood or revealed?
Will the Arlington Heights Police Department ever release more information about the case?
Will the truth ever be known?
“Why are we not digging and asking more questions?”
— Michelle Rosen
