DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced today that a jury found Lawrence Grant, age 41, formerly of Chicago, guilty of shooting a woman who was eight-months pregnant while she was traveling on Route 83 in early 2022. The jury returned their verdict this afternoon following a four day-long trial and approximately two-and one-half hours of deliberations. In all, the jury found Grant guilty of one count of Attempt Murder (Class X Felony), one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm (Class X Felony) and two counts of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony). On February 4, 2022, Grant appeared in Bond Court where bond was set bond at $2 million with 10% to apply. Lawrence Grant remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since his arrest.

Police officers with the Willowbrook Police Department responded about 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2022 to the scene of a crashed vehicle on Route 83. Upon arrival, police officers found the victim, a pregnant woman, suffering from a gunshot wound to her back. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital where her baby was delivered while the victim was in surgery. Both the baby and mother survived and have subsequently recovered. Prior to the crash, Lawrence Grant, the victim, and another individual were in a Whole Foods grocery store, 6300 Kingery Highway (Route 83), and were involved in a verbal altercation that eventually turned physical. After the altercation, all three individuals left the store in different vehicles with the victim traveling southbound on Route 83. Grant allegedly followed the victim in his vehicle, and shot at her — striking the vehicle several times, and striking the victim in her back. After the shots were fired, the shooting victim’s vehicle crashed.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., Grant was located at the University of Chicago Hospital where he was admitted on an unrelated matter. The vehicle in which Grant was allegedly traveling was found destroyed by fire approximately one block from the University of Chicago Hospital. Grant was immediately taken into custody following his discharge from the hospital.

“On January 28, 2022, after the victim repeatedly declined Lawrence Grant’s advances, he caused a scene inside the Whole Foods store, turned a verbal argument with the victim’s boyfriend into a physical confrontation, followed the victim in her car as she fled the scene and then opened fire at her multiple times, striking her in the back, causing her to crash her car. “Today, the jury sent a clear message that Mr. Grant’s violent actions of shooting a pregnant woman in the back will not be tolerated in DuPage County and that he will be held responsible. I thank Judge Guerin for ensuring that both sides received a fair trial in this case as well as the jury for sending the message that armed violence will not be tolerated in DuPage County. I thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Joseph Lindt, Bethany Jackson and Alexandria Levan for their outstanding work in holding Mr. Grant responsible for the physical and emotional pain and suffering he has caused the victim in this case.”

— DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin

Grant’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 20, 2025, for return of the Pre-sentence Report. He faces a penalty of between thirty-one years to life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
