An Illinois State Police trooper discovered a semi-trailer dump truck with the trailer hanging partially over the edge of the bridge over Illinois Route 83 near Addison. The trooper requested EMS respond to the scene. The truck was also leaking diesel fuel out of a saddle tank. Addison Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics were assigned to the scene. The truck driver was evaluated by Addison Fire Protection District paramedics.
A semi-trailer dump truck rolled over on the driver’s side on I-290 WEST at Illinois Route 83, spilling salt on I-290 and Illinois Route 83 below. Initially, southbound lanes of Route 83 were open. The left lane and center lane were both closed on I-290 WEST, and Illinois Route 83 was eventually closed in both directions.
The salt was poured over the bridge into the gap between I-290 WEST and I-290 EAST.
Elmhurst police and Addison police blocked Route 83 in both directions.
Before the Route 83 road block, some motorists were driving through the piles of salt in the northbound lanes of Route 83.
