Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser announced Tuesday March 11, 2025 that Judge John Barsanti has sentenced Byron Frazier to a total of 57 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections, convicted of shooting his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, who had approached him.

On August 12, 2024, a jury convicted Frazier of the following offenses:

● Attempt first-degree murder, Class X felony

● Aggravated battery with a firearm, Class X felony

● Armed violence, Class X felony

● Armed habitual criminal, Class X felony

Regarding sentencing, Frazier receives 31 years on the charge of Attempt first-degree murder; the defendant must serve 85% of this portion of the sentence. He receives 20 years on the charge of Armed violence; the defendant must serve 50% of this sentence. And he receives six years on the charge of Armed habitual criminal; the defendant must serve 85% of this sentence. Each sentence will begin to be served only after the previous sentence is completed. The defendant did not receive a sentence on the charge of Aggravated battery with a firearm because that count merged into the more serious offense of Attempt first-degree murder.

Assistant State’s Attorneys Mark Stajdohar and Kathryn Wuerstl presented the following facts in court. On the afternoon of August 18, 2022, at approximately 4:20 p.m., shooting victim Jonathan Chatman pulled into a Mobil gas station at 1030 N. Lake Street, Aurora, where he had seen his ex-girlfriend’s parked vehicle. After Chatman approached his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle, his ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend, defendant Byron Frazier, came to stand next to Chatman. Frazier reached into the vehicle, retrieved a handgun, and shot Chatman.

Frazier and his girlfriend left the scene, but were followed to her residence by Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Kozel. Frazier attempted to escape on foot, but was pursued and taken into custody. During the pursuit, Frazier dropped a bag that was retrieved by Aurora Police Department investigators, the contents of which later tested positive as cocaine.
Chatman was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for the gunshot wound and spent many months confined to a wheelchair.

Since court proceedings proved that the Attempt first-degree murder offense was committed with a firearm and caused great bodily harm to the victim, Illinois law required that an additional 25 years be added to the six-year term of imprisonment.

Frazier receives credit for 937 days served in the Kane County jail.

“When a convicted felon arms himself with a firearm and possesses cocaine, nothing good can occur. Thankfully the victim is alive and has progressed in his recovery to the point that he can walk with crutches. The defendant put all of Aurora in danger that day when he fired a weapon in a gas station in the middle of the day on a busy street. ASA Stajdohar and ASA Wuerstl would like to thank all of the members of the Aurora Police Department and the Illinois State Police who responded to this very dangerous situation. Special thanks to Master Sergeant Kozel, who followed the defendant as he attempted to flee the scene of the crime, and lead investigator Greg Christoffel. Aurora will be a safer city with this defendant in prison for the next four decades.”
