SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT INVESTIGATED – SOUTH MIDDLE SCHOOL
January 16, 2025 6:00pm – The Arlington Heights Police Department responded to South Middle School following a report of a spent shell cartridge found by a student on school grounds. Upon investigation, it was determined there was no credible threat to the school, its students, or the community.
The incident was reported to school staff at approximately 1:30 P.M. (apparently today, Thursday, January 16, 2025), and the Arlington Heights Police Department was immediately notified. Investigating officers met with school administrators and conducted a preliminary investigation. Out of an abundance of caution, an extra police presence was provided to students and staff during dismissal time.
Due to recent construction activity at the school, investigating personnel have not ruled out that the spent shell casing was an expended powder actuated cartridge, a byproduct from a construction anchoring tool.
A Police K9 sweep of the building will be conducted. Specialized Police canines are trained to identify scents associated with firearms and ammunition.
While there is no identified threat, the Arlington Heights Police Department encourages parents, students, and staff to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement and school authorities.
As an added precaution, officers will maintain an increased presence around the school in the coming days to provide reassurance to the community.
