DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced today, Friday, January 17, 2025, that an Aurora resident, who was facing a sentence of between twenty-one to forty-five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for robbing a Lisle Verizon store at gunpoint of duffel bags of cell phones and other electronics, has been sentenced to twenty-two years in the IDOC. At today’s sentencing hearing in front of Judge Brian Telander, the State had asked for the maximum penalty of forty-five years for Aaron Thompson, age 29. Thompson and his cousin, co-defendant, Ezekiel Thompson, age 29, formerly of Aurora, both appeared at Bond Court on February 3, 2020, where the Court ordered they both be held without bond. On September 30, 2024, Aaron Thompson entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of Armed Robbery with a Firearm, a Class X Felony punishable by a sentence of between twenty-one to forty-five years. The case against Ezekiel Thompson is pending. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 17, 2025, for status.

At approximately 6:48 p.m., February 1, 2020, Aaron Thompson and Ezekiel Thompson, armed and wearing hoods and masks over their faces, allegedly entered the Verizon store located at 1104 Ogden Avenue in Lisle. Once inside the store, Ezekiel Thompson allegedly pointed a gun at the lone store employee and ordered him to the back of the store where he was ordered to open a vault containing cellular telephones. The two male offenders ordered the store employee, who at one time begged the defendants not to kill him, to fill a duffel bag with cellular telephones and other electronics. After the employee complied, the offenders allegedly bound the employee’s arms and legs with zip ties, stole his wallet and car keys, and took the duffel bag with them as they fled the scene in the employee’s car which they stole from the parking lot. An investigation into the matter led by the Lisle Police Department with assistance from the Woodridge, Downers Grove and Darien Police Departments led to the men who were allegedly located in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Woodridge. The offenders abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. They were both taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

“It is alleged that without care or concern for the rule of law, Aaron Thompson and his cousin armed themselves with a gun, disguised their identity and threatened at gunpoint an innocent store employee to the point of forcing the employee to literally beg for his life. I cannot begin to imagine the fear that employee must have experienced as he looked down the barrel of a loaded gun. This type of violent crime must be met head on and through the cooperative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies including the Lisle, Woodridge, Downers Grove and Darien Police Departments, Aaron Thompson was taken into custody. I thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Bethany Jackson and Adam Frahm for their efforts in preparing a strong case against this defendant.”
