NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Naperville Fire Department responded about 8:24 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, 2024 with a full still assignment for an investigation of smoke inside MOD Pizza, 103 S. Washington St. The alarm consisted of two engines, one truck, one medic unit, an incident commander and a safety officer, which brought a total of 13 personnel to the scene.

At 8:27 p.m., fire companies arrived on scene and the presence of smoke was noted inside the building. An investigation revealed fire in and around the enclosure of a pizza oven inside the restaurant itself. The alarm was upgraded to a general alarm response, which brought an additional four fire apparatus and 11 personnel. An offensive attack was initiated with a hose line placed into operation in an effort to extinguish the fire inside the structure. Building evacuation was completed and crews checked the roof to ensure no fire extension had occurred outside the original area of origin. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes of crews arriving on scene. Companies continued with overhaul of the building and its contents to ensure all areas of fire were completely extinguished.

Fire damage was contained to the oven and contents in the immediate area around the oven. Fire cause was investigated and found to be accidental in nature. Contacts were made with Naperville’s Transportation, Engineering, and Development Department, as well as DuPage County Health Department. No injuries were sustained by civilians or fire personnel during the incident. Crews on scene were assisted by Naperville Police Department. The scene was turned back over to the business manager upon completion of the investigation. Damage by the fire was estimated to be $11,000.

The city of La Cañada Flintridge, which was threatened by the January 2025 Eaton Fire in the Los Angeles area, did not experience fire damage, but La Cañada Flintridge residents were forced to evacuate, and were affected by poor air quality and disruptions in electric power reliability.

La Cañada Flintridge is located just west of Altadena, where 17 fire-related deaths occurred less than three miles east of La Cañada Flintridge. Erik Ortiz and Jon Schuppe of NBC News questioned the efficacy of evacuation alerts and reported that the 17 people who died in the Eaton fire were west of Lake Avenue — a major corridor that runs north-south through Altadena. Fifteen of the deaths occurred in an area where the first evacuation order wasn’t activated until 3:25 a.m. on January 8, 2025. The other two deaths occurred in an area where the evacuation order was activated at 5:42 a.m. January 8, 2025. The first evacuation alerts in eastern Altadena for the Eaton fire occurred the afternoon of January 7, 2025, according to a review of the alerts as well as data compiled by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The first fire of the major January 2025 fires in the Los Angeles area, known as the Palisades Fire, was reported about 10:30 a.m. PT January 7, 2025 in Pacific Palisades, about 30 miles west-southwest of the Eaton Fire.

La Cañada Flintridge is west of Altadena and northwest of Pasadena where over 9,000 structures were destroyed.

Eaton Fire’s evacuations expand to La Cañada Flintridge, including NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the Eaton Fire that began in the foothills above Altadena continued to burn uncontrolled (ABC7 Los Angeles). YouTube Tips ⓘ
