Police, firefighters and paramedics from Mundelein responded about 1:08 a.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2025 to a report of a crash with injuries at Lake Street and Lyndale Street in Mundelein. The crash, north of Lyndale Street, was located near the railroad overpass on Route 45 (Lake Street) between Dunbar Road and Route 176. Dunbar Road is north of the crash scene, and Route 176 is south of the crash scene.
Police were first on the scene, and requested firefighters and paramedics expedite to the scene. Rescuers discovered a 24 year-old woman trapped inside a severely damaged Acura sedan. The woman was extricated by 1:36 a.m., and was in traumatic cardiac arrest at the scene. She was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased.
Route 45 near the scene remained closed for a crash investigation. Based on the seriousness of the incident, the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was requested to assist in the investigation.
After the crash investigation, a load transfer was managed from the crashed semi-trailer to another semi-trailer that was brought to the scene.
The Route 45 crash scene was cleared about 8:00 a.m.
According to Mundelein police, the 24 year-old woman was driving the Acura southbound on Route 45, when she lost control, crossed the center line, and crashed into the semi-trailer truck head-on. The police information was according to a statement by the truck driver.
There may have been ice on the road from a broken water main.
A 44 year-old male was driving the semi-trailer truck. He was transported to Condell Medical Center for assessment of non-life-threatening injuries.
