Damage assessment for Tuesday evening’s storm appears to have mostly affected Hoffman Estates and Palatine. The storm hit the Schaumburg area about 7:40 p.m. and crossed through Arlington Heights about 7:45 p.m. to 7:52 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

The storm threat moved east of the area of the northwest suburbs by about 8:00 p.m.

The most serious damage on a single property, appears to be a roof of a house in Hoffman Estates, and electrical fire in a house in Rolling Meadows, and wall collapse at an apartment complex in Mundelein.

DAMAGE TIMELINE …

7:42 PM — Tree down across the roadway near 450 West Schaumburg Road near the post office in Schaumburg.

7:52 PM — Activated Fire Alarm and a smell of natural gas at Core Orthopedics, 2380 Lakewood Boulevard in Hoffman Estates.

7:54 PM — Tree or tree branch on a power line with flames visible near Wilke Road and Ravinia Circle in Palatine.

7:56 PM — Transformer on fire with sparking at the front of the house in the block of 1100 Smith Street in Palatine.

7:57 PM — Gas odor in the block kof 2400 Palazzo Drive in Buffalo Grove.

7:57 PM — Power line down in the block of 600 Maple Avenue in Palatine.

8:02 PM — Transformer sparking in front of the Palatine Police Department Headquarters, 595 North Hicks Road in Palatine.

8:03 PM — Odor of natural gas in the block of 0-99 North Barrington Road Barrington.

8:13 PM — Utility pole on fire in the block of 700 West Northwest Highway in Palatine.

8:18 PM — Wire down on the street at Helgesen Stree and Hillcrest Road in Palatine.

8:21 PM — Roof off of a house in the block of 4000 Fir Court in Hoffman Estates.

8:23 PM — Power line down Route 53 and Long Grove Road in Long Grove.

8:27 PM — Power lines down in the block of 0-99 Ela Road in Inverness.

8:29 PM — Tree down on a building in the block of 800 Panorama Drive in Palatine.

8:30 PM — Electrical odor and light smoke in the block of 2000 Adams Street in Rolling Meadows. Firefighters found heat and then fire in a wall. Firefighters pulling of siding, checking for extension. Fire out by about 8:43 PM. ComEd requested to the scene. Fire possibly caused by power problem related to the storm. Firefighters requesting power shut down at the affected house

8:33 PM — Tree across the road on Cuba Road just west of ? (Nottingham?)

8:35 PM — Power lines down with significant amount of damage Hassell and Oakdale Hoffman Estates.

9:03 PM — Mundelein firefighters and paramedics working at the scene of a structural collapse at 32 Washington Boulevard Mundelein. Report of a partial collapse of a wall at an apartment building at Washington Apartments.

No high winds were observed in central Arlington Heights, and lightning was mostly, if not all, cloud-to-cloud lightning in Arlington Heights. Pea-size hail fell in Arlington Heights about 7:45 p.m.

NWS Chicago at O’Hare reported a wind gust of 41 MPH around 7:51 PM.

NWS Chicago at Chicago Executive Airport reported a wind gust of 44 MPH around 7:52 PM.

 TUE/WED OVERNIGHT … 

The weather forecast for the rest of the night includes rain likely until about 3:00 a.m., then snow likely. Some thunder is also possible. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21.

Windy, with a south southeast wind 10 to 20 mph becoming northwest 20 to 30 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 45 MPH around midnight then dropping back to 38 to 41 MPH until about 11:00 am. Wednesday.

Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

The snow forecast for southern Arlington Heights is 0.8 inch, which will accumulate between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.
