Illinois State Police troopers responded about 6:14 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2024 for a report of shots fired from a vehicle near I-290 WEST (northbound) and Biesterfield Road near Elk Grove Village, which was reported to have occurred about 6:10 a.m.

Initially the shots fired call was indicated to be on I-290 WEST (northbound) near Biesterfield Road, Elk Grove Village. No injuries were reported, and details about property damage were not available. However, it appears that troopers focused their attention near I-290 and IL-390 instead of Biesterfield.

Troopers received a report that a male offender fired a weapon from a white Ford van. The driver was only described as a male, age 28.

During the on-scene Unlawful Use of Weapon investigation, the Illinois State Police shut down the ramp from eastbound IL-390 to I-290 WEST (north) at about 7:12 a.m. for a walking canvas of the expressway lanes in order to search for evidence. The Illinois State Police did not indicate whether any casings were discovered.

Most of the traffic congestion initially appeared to be backed up on IL-390 EAST from the I-290/IL-390 interchange to just west of Rohlwing Road around 7:12 a.m.

The canvas may have expanded at about 8:00 a.m. as police were also shutting down I-290 WEST (northbound) just east (south) of the interchange with IL-390. The traffic backup on eastbound IL-390 then extended from the I-290/IL-390 interchange to around Meacham Road/Medinah Road — a traffic backup of a little over one mile.

The directions are a little confusing because I-290 WEST consists of northbound lanes all the way from the I-355/I-290 split, passing the interchange with IL-390, and up to Schaumburg; and I-290 EAST consists of southbound lanes from Schaumburg, passing the interchange with IL-390, and continuing to the I-290/I-355 split.

Ramp closure indicated from IL-390 EAST to I-290 WEST (northbound) at about 9:30 a.m. The closure was indicated to last until 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, but the ramp was opened before 10:30 a.m. (Map data ©2024)
