The driver of a white Infiniti, who was shot last night, was not engaged in a road rage incident with the driver of a crashed Kia, according to multiple anonymous sources. The driver of the Infiniti was a Good Samaritan in the process of notifying Mount Prospect Police Department regarding a reckless driver that was running red lights in a Kia sub-compact with the headlights turned off while traveling through Des Plaines, Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights.

The incident began when the driver of a Kia subcompact car almost T-boned the driver of the Infiniti, who was traveling on River Road near downtown Des Plaines.

The driver of another Kia was also traveling along with the driver of the Kia that almost T-boned the white Infiniti. The two vehicles were possibly a Kia Soul and a Kia Rio.

The Infiniti driver likely didn’t know that he was following two stolen vehicles, and that the occupants were part of a crew of auto thieves working in the northwest suburbs Sunday night.

Also, on Sunday night, other vehicles were stolen, or attempted stolen, causing damage to the owner’s vehicles in the area. It happens more often than village managers, mayors and other village leaders would like their citizens to understand, apparently.

According to a friend of the driver of the white Infiniti, the motorist followed safely behind the drivers of the two Kias because he wanted to help police locate the vehicles that were being operated unsafely.

While the Good Samaritan was contacting police about the reckless drivers, he may have been oblivious to the danger he was facing — determined to help police get the driver off the road for safety reasons. Eventually, on Camp McDonald Road, the Kia driver may have reached speeds around 70 MPH just before crashing. The Kia subcompact and the Infiniti had been westbound on Camp McDonald Road when the driver of the Kia subcompact left the roadway, missed a wood utility pole by about 8 feet, and stopped and became stuck in a snow-covered yard adjacent to Camp McDonald Road. The two car thieves, realizing they needed to flee from the scene because they possessed a stolen Kia, ran from the vehicle. They also called for back-up — from another Kia Boys crew.

The driver of the white Infiniti stopped at what he thought was a safe distance back from the first crashed Kia. Then a driver and occupant in another Kia arrived. The motorist in the Infiniti circled the block and sounded his horn, apparently to alert neighbors that criminal activity was happening in their neighborhood. However, that may have aggravated the “Kia Boys.”

The driver of the second Kia arrived from the direction of Wolf Road (eastbound on Camp McDonald Road), then picked up the two occupants of the first Kia, and then approached and aimed his vehicle at the Infiniti. Then the driver of the second Kia made a left turn U-turn at the intersection of Camp McDonald Road and Mandel Lane. Shots were fired from the passenger window of the second Kia vehicle, described as an SUV.

Prospect Heights and Mount Prospect police arrived within seconds of being notified of the crash location, but it was too late to intervene at the shooting scene, and too late to locate the driver and four occupants fleeing in the Kia SUV.

Three shots, maybe four shots, were fired from the Kia SUV in the direction of the white Infiniti SUV. At least one bullet went through the driver’s side door of the Infiniti, and struck the driver of the Infiniti. The driver used his belt as a tourniquet, and plugged the gunshot wound with his thumb. The driver of the Infiniti then fled east toward River Road to get help for his gunshot wound. The driver of the Kia SUV chased the wounded driver for a short time. Then the driver of the Kia SUV fled west toward Wolf Road, and then may have turned right, heading north on Wolf Road.

The shooting victim in the white Infiniti managed to travel about 1.3 miles — east on Camp McDonald Road and south on River Road to Euclid Avenue. He then drove up to the front door of the convenience store at the Shell gas station to get help.

Police and paramedics from Mount Prospect arrived a short time later.

The shots fired from the Kia SUV, then occupied by four criminals, caused a gunshot wound that involved serious bleeding. Police were first on the scene at the Shell gas station, and requested that Mount Prospect Fire Department paramedics expedite to the scene at the Shell gas station. The gunshot victim in the Infiniti was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He was released from the hospital today.

Tire tracks in the snow leading up to the Kia indicated the driver of the Kia subcompact was traveling westbound on Camp McDonald Road when the vehicle left the roadway.
