Identity Released of Man, Age 72, Killed in Head-On Crash on Russell Rd at the Des Plaines River in Newport Township

The identity was released of a male driver who was killed when another driver crossed the center line in a pickup truck and crashed into the victim’s Chevrolet Malibu head-on.

According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, the driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was positively identified Tuesday night as 72-year-old Harold Glasscock of Vernon Township. A autopsy was conducted on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Mr. Glasscock died from blunt force injuries suffered as a result of the crash.




Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators are investigating the fatal crash in unincorporated Zion near Russell, Illinois in Newport Township that occurred Halloween morning.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighers and paramedics from Newport Township Fire Protection District responded about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, October 31, 2023 to a head-on traffic crash on West Russell Road at Park Lane, in unincorporated Zion. Lake Counthy Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Malibu, both with major damage.




The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-150 sustained serious injuries and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by ambulance.

A dog was also injured in the crash.

Preliminary investigation shows the Ford F-150, driven by a 46-year-old man of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was traveling westbound on Russell Road. The Chevrolet, driven by a 72-year-old man of Indian Creek, was traveling eastbound. For an unknown reason, the 46 year-old driver of the Ford crossed into the eastbound lanes of traffic, traveling in the wrong direction, and struck the Chevrolet head-on. The crash killed the 72 year-old man who was apparently in his proper lane.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team. There are two curves on Russell Road located on either side of the Des Plaines River. Park Lane is located east of one of the curves that is east of the Des Plaines River. Icy road conditions, especially on bridges, were reported between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. while there was snow falling and accumulating on grassy surfaces.

The Speed Limit from Kilbourne Road to about Park Lane is 30 MPH, and the Speed Limit west of Park Lane to Interstate 94 is 40 MPH and then 45 MPH further west, according to Google Maps Street View.

Russel Road was closed for an extended on-scene crash investigation between Kilbourne Road/88th Avenue and Interstate 94.
