A large explosion occurred northwest of Oxford, UK near Yarnton and Woodstock about 7:45 p.m. GMT+1 Monday, October 2, 2023.
Initially the cause of the explosion was not widely known.

Lightning was reported in the area.

UPDATE:

The explosion was caused by a lightning strike of a digester tanks at the Severn Trent Green Power Plant at Cassington, north of Oxford.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent Green Power stated, “This evening a digester tank at our Cassington facility near Yarnton, Oxfordshire, has been struck by lightning which has caused an explosion in our biogas tanks. Thankfully no one has been hurt and we are working with the emergency services to make sure the site is safe so that we can assess the damage as soon as possible.”
