The operator of a boat traveling at high speed on the Fox River overran the west bank of the Fox River into the backyard of a house in the block of 600 Country Club Drive in unincorporated McHenry Saturday evening, killing a man and woman that were on the boat.




A witness, Conner Lively, reported that he heard a big boom and went outside to find a boat upside down, and split in half, with a woman underneath the boat and a man on the other side of the boat.

McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies, and police, firefighters, and paramedics from McHenry responded about 5:40 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 to a report of a boat crash into the back of a house in the block of 600 Country Club Drive. Police and firefighters discovered a destroyed boat that had clipped a rear deck at the back of the house with two crash victims. McHenry Township Fire Protection District fire command on scene reported one Code Black (deceased) and one Code Red (critical/life-threatened) patient.

There was no fire reported. Initially there were no injuries reported to any people that were pedestrians on the west bank of the Fox River.

A LifeNet helicopter was requested to respond to a landing zone at the back parking lot of McHenry East High School Freshman Campus. A male victim, age 62, of McHenry, was airlifted to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Medical Center in Libertyville. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The female victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Security video from the east bank of the Fox River captured video of the boat crossing the river, bouncing on waves, and then bouncing up the bank of the river to the back of the house.




Witnesses also reported the boat was traveling northbound on the Fox River near the Snuggery River Roadhouse when the operator circled back at high speed. One witness described the boat maneuver like a car doing donuts. The crash occurred across the river and south from the Snuggery River Roadhouse located on River Road.

The Illinois Conservation Police (Illinois Department of Natural Resources) is leading the investigation. An Illinois Conservation Police officer was immediately dispatched to the scene, along with McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies, and McHenry city police officers who provided assistance at the helicopter landing zone.
