The Elk Grove Village Police Department released information on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. after a police pursuit ended in a crash with two of three offenders at large in the area of I-290/IL-53 and Biesterfield Road on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at around 8:55 a.m.

According to the Elk Grove Police Department, on Thursday, September 21, 2023, around 8:55 p.m., Berkeley, Illinois Police Officers reported that they were pursuing a vehicle, and it had crashed on the eastbound ramp of I-290/IL-53 near Biesterfield Road. Three occupants fled from the crash and the Berkeley Police requested assistance. The Elk Grove Village Police Department and several other police agencies responded to assist. A perimeter was set up in the area along the expressway between Biesterfield Road and Devon Avenue and police conducted a search of the area. One suspect was immediately arrested.

According to the Elk Grove Village Police Department, after an initial search, there was no indication to believe the two remaining suspects were still in the area, and the local search was terminated.

The Elk Grove Village Police Department wrote on Facebook that because there was no direct threat to the general public, and the initial search indicated that the suspects were not still in this area, there was no public notification at the time of the incident.

The Elk Grove Village Police Department did not reveal what time police officers determined the suspects were no longer in the area. The police department also did not indicate how they knew that the “at large” suspects were not a threat to the community.

The Facebook message from the Elk Grove Police Department also explained that “not all incidents warrant public alerts, and we strive to balance our mission to ensure the safety of the public with the desire of residents to be informed when there is visible activity in the community.”

The Elk Grove Police Department notified the public about 13 hours after the Illinois State Police, Berkeley Police, Hillside Police, Bensenville Police, Villa Park Police, Elk Grove Village Police, Schaumburg Police and other police officers converged in the area of Biesterfield Road and I-290/IL-53 to a crash of a white Chrysler into a ditch during a police pursuit. The crash occurred at about 8:55 p.m. Thursday, September 21, 2023. Three male/black suspects ran from the vehicle. One suspect was immediately in custody by about 8:56 p.m. — less than a minute or two after the crash. Two male black suspects fled in the area. A large police perimeter was immediately set up in the area to attempt to apprehend the two suspects.

A fully-loaded magazine was discovered after the white Chrysler crashed in a ditch near Biesterfield Road and I-290/IL-53. The suspects should be considered armed and dangerous.

Initially, the pursuit was believed to have begun with Hillside police at about 8:44 p.m. on I-290 WEST. Hillside police were initially following the white Chrysler. A pursuit progressed along I-290 WEST to Biesterfield Road.

Citizens in the area were advised by CARDINAL NEWS that they should be aware of the possibility of increased risk of an attempted carjacking or home invasion in the area.

There are numerous townhomes, single-family home, and apartment buildings in the area. Busse Woods is also nearby with many marshy areas that would make tracking difficult. Also, Alexian Brothers Medical Center is in the area.

A police helicopter was overhead in the area watching for suspicious subjects or a driver and vehicle that might arrive to pick up the at large suspects. No vehicle pickups were observed by the helicopter crew, and the police helicopter crew was called for another pursuit in Chicagoland within an hour of the crash at I-290/IL-53 and Biesterfield Road.

The ramp from I-290 EAST/IL-53 South to Route 53/Biesterfield Road was shut down Thursday night.
