Driver Says She Was Distracted by Children in Her SUV in Crash that Critically Injured Bicyclist on Fairfield Rd Near Route 176

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a traffic crash that occurred on Fairfield Road near Route 176, and caused injuries that left a bicyclist in critical condition.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Wauconda were dispatched about 7:00 a.m. Sunday, September 10, 2023 to a report of a traffic crash involving a bicyclist on Fairfield Road near Route 176, unincorporated Wauconda. Lake Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found the bicyclist, a 48-year-old man of Waukegan, with critical injuries.




When Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they provided life-saving measures for the bicyclist. He was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical, life-threatening injuries. The occupants in the Dodge, the driver and two minor children, were did not initially report any injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a Dodge SUV, driven by a 24-year-old woman of Palatine, was traveling southbound on Fairfield Road, just north of Route 176. The bicyclist was also traveling southbound, on the right side of the roadway. The driver of the Dodge indicated that as she traveled southbound, she became distracted by young children in her car, and turned her attention away from the roadway. The Dodge veered to the right and struck the bicyclist, causing the bicyclist to strike the front of the Dodge and the Dodge’s windshield, before falling underneath the the Dodge.




Following an on-scene crash investigation, the SUV vs bicycle crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

About 1600 feet north of the intersection with Route 176, Fairfield Road is a two lane highway with a combined soft shoulder and hard shoulder on both sides of the roadway. The combination shoulder continues where Fairfield Road becomes four lanes (two lanes in each direction). There are also some slight curves on Fairfield Road approaching Route 176. The Speed Limit is posted 45 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View images.

There is a southbound right turn lane to westbound Route 176 at the intersection. The combination hard shoulder and soft shoulder continues along Fairfield Road just north of the full width of the right turn lane where the southbound right lane of Fairfield Road begins. The soft shoulder is replace with a curbed parkway where the full-width right lane begins.

Although there are four lanes total in both directions north of Route 176, at the intersection there are six lanes, including a left turn lane to eastbound Route 176, and the right turn lane to westbound Route 176.

The crash scene was located near Wauconda and Hawthorn Woods, and near the Lakewood Dog Park.
