A young male adult resident of Buffalo Grove has been accused of starting a fire that destroyed a car inside an attached garage of a house on Lucinda Drive in Buffalo Grove, after he walked up and reported the fire to police officers assigned coverage at Buffalo Grove Days. The 5-day festival (8/31/23 – 9/4/23) at Mike Rylko Community Park was located just across Route 83 from the scene of the fire. Firefighters assigned to stand by at Buffalo Grove Days were also nearby, and were able to respond very quickly to the reported fire.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Buffalo Grove responded about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, September 2, 2023 to a report of a vehicle fire in a garage in the block of 900 Lucinda Drive in Buffalo Grove.

Initially the incident was a report of a car fire, then a report that the garage might be on fire, too. The first crew on arrival reported a 2-story home with an automobile fire in the attached garage. While firefighters from neighboring communities were also assigned to the possible house fire, Buffalo Grove fire command at the scene immediately limited responding equipment and crews to Buffalo Grove units only.

The fire was declared out by 9:19 p.m., and Buffalo Grove fire investigators and the Illinois State Fire Marshal were called to the scene.

Investigators discovered video surveillance images that allegedly showed Evan Rude, age 23, of Buffalo Grove walking up to the vehicle parked in the garage, and lighting a lighter. The video also allegedly showed Rude walking away from the vehicle with new flames coming from the vehicle. Evan Rude stands 5’10” 160 LBS.

Evan Rude was charged with one count of Felony Criminal Damage to Property ($500-$10,000), according to court records. No arson charges were listed. Rude was booked and released on Sunday, September 3, 2023. Evan Rude was ordered held on $25,000 bond, and was released on September 3, 2023 after posting 10% of bond ($2,500). Evan Rude was present for the bond hearing. A public offender was discharged, and the next scheduled court date is Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. in Lake County Courtroom T020 for “Status of Attorney”.

Evan Rude has a criminal history of a Misdemeanor Case involving a substantive offense of Reckless Conduct that occurred on July 22, 2022 in Buffalo Grove. Rude and his attorney David Smith withdrew a Not Guilty plea, and Evan Rude was found guilty of Reckless Conduct on April 20, 2023. Evan Rude is serving a sentence of probation for a period of 18 months, according to Lake County Court records.
