Illinois State Police troopers and local firefighters and paramedics responded about 9:09 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2023 to a report of a hit-and-run crash with injuries at southbound I-294 at MM 21 Chicago.

A 911 caller reported a box truck was located in Lane 5 facing the wrong way, and a white van was located on the right shoulder. Illinois State Police also received a report that a driver of a black sedan with heavy front-end damage was fleeing the crash scene northbound in the southbound lanes of I-294. The hit-and-run driver was described as a male/white wearing a gray shirt, and black shorts. The hit-and-run driver stopped the black sedan at the left shoulder and got into a black newer model BMW SUV that was headed southbound on I-294. A witness reported the hit-and-run driver had a bleeding gash on his forehead.

An off-duty paramedic on the initial crash scene advised bullets (ammo), empty gun magazines, along with empty beer cans were all over the inside of the black sedan. Bullets were also all over the roadway.

Police were out with black sedan (possibly a Toyota) on the left shoulder north of the crash scene. An Illinois State Police trooper confirmed there was no driver located by the wrecked black sedan.

Both scenes (the abandoned black sedan scene and the initial hit-and-run scene) may have been located on the Mile Long Bridge over the Des Plaines River. The precise location of the scene of the abandoned black sedan at the left shoulder of the northbound lanes of I-294 was not initially disclosed.

The communities of Willow Springs, Countryside, Hodgkins, Bridgeview, Justice and Hickory Hills are near this crime scene.
