The Lake County Coroner’s Office on Monday, August 14, 2023 released the identity of an Oakwood Hills woman who was killed in a crash with a fuel truck on Rand Road in Volo Saturday morning. The woman who died was identified as 83-year-old Dorothy Lasota, of Oakwood Hills. An autopsy was conducted on Monday, August 14, 2023 at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary results of the autopsy indicate that Mrs. Lasota died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Wauconda Fire District responded about 7:25 a.m., Saturday, August 12, 2023, for a traffic crash with injuries in the block of 31200 North Route 12 in Volo. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located a Chevrolet Cruze with heavy damage, involved in a crash with a fuel tanker truck carrying gasoline. Good Samaritans were performing CPR before paramedics arrived.

The driver of the Chevrolet sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported via ambulance to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was pronounced deceased. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured and is cooperating with the investigation.

There was no ignition of the gasoline and there was no fire involved with the crash.

The fuel tanker, carrying about 9,000 gallons of fuel, did not rupture; and the truck did not roll over, even though the embankment angle was steep. The fuel load (gasoline/United Nations/North America identifier 1203) was transferred out of the tanker before the truck and tanker were towed away.

Wauconda and Lakemoor police officers were also assigned to the scene all lanes of Route 12 were closed during rescue and investigation operations between North Old Rand Road and Russell Drive.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Chevrolet, an 84-year-old woman of Oakwood Hills, was exiting a parking lot at Platinum Autobody of Volo on the east side of Route 12. She traveled west from the parking lot, toward the southbound lanes, as the semi-truck, driven by a 39-year-old man of McHenry was traveling northbound. The driver of the Chevrolet abruptly made a U-turn, in front of the semi-truck. The driver of the semi-truck drove into the grassy area off the right shoulder to avoid a direct collision. The Chevrolet Cruze struck the rear of the semi-truck, causing major damage.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy on the driver of the Chevrolet.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations unit with the assistance of the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team.

The Speed Limit on northbound Route 12 near the scene is 55 MPH according to the Google Maps Street View images captured December 2022.
