The victim’s identity was released today, Monday, July 31, 2023 of a teen who was killed as a pedestrian near a crash at the intersection of Washington Street and Atkinson Road in Grayslake Saturday morning. Preliminary results of the autopsy indicate that Ms. Piela died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Grayslake Police Department and MCAT.

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Grayslake responded about 10:12 a.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023 to a report of a crash with injuries with a pedestrian also injured at the intersection of Washington Street and Atkinson Road in Grayslake near the Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve.

Upon arrival of police, firefighters, and paramedics; two vehicles and a large trailer were discovered involved in a personal injury crash. A female pedestrian was found unresponsive, and was treated with Advanced Life Support, and transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The pedestrian, an 18 year-old female resident of Grayslake, was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Advocate Condell Medical Center. Two drivers were also transported to a nearby hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life threatening.

According to the Grayslake Police Department, a preliminary investigation revealed that a Ford Escape and a Ford F-350 with an trailer collided, resulting in the Ford F-350 leaving the roadway and striking an 18 year-old Grayslake resident, who was standing near the intersection at the southeast corner.

A white Ford F-350 was hauling a large white enclosed trailer, possibly used for transporting landscaping equipment. Neither the pickup truck nor the trailer had markings with words or a logo. The trailer became separated from the pickup truck, and came to a stop on the southeast corner of the intersection. The pickup truck continued further east off the roadway. Most of the damage to the pickup truck appeared to be located at the front, left fender (driver’s side). The gray Ford Escape involved in the crash was discovered with severe front-end damage, and a broken rear tailgate window.

The crash also destroyed a traffic signal control box at the southeast corner of the intersection. Meade Electric personnel were on the scene along with Ernie’s Towing personnel waiting for the on-scene investigation to end, and the cleanup and repair to begin.

Evidence was collected at the scene, including drone photography and ground level photography with members of the Grayslake Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team investigating. The crash investigation is continuing beyond the on-scene investigation.

The Speed Limit on Washington Street east and west of Atkinson Road is 45 MPH. There were no Speed Limit signs discovered on Atkinson Road, but there are alert signs for BIKE XING and PLAYGROUND AHEAD on northbound Atkinson Road. A Lake County Passage camera is installed at the intersection.

The aftermath of the Grayslake crash looked similar to a crash that killed a bicyclist that was standing at the southeast corner of Lake Cook Road and Wilke Road in Arlington Heights — waiting to cross Lake Cook Road in Arlington Heights to proceed north into the Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve of Lake County. In that crash, a landscaper’s dump truck with a landscaping trailer was driven eastbound on Lake Cook Road when the driver of a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox made a left turn from westbound Lake Cook Road to head south on Wilke Road. The two vehicles colleded nearly head-on. The pickup truck and trailer careened off Lake Cook Road and crossed over the southeast corner — killing the bicyclist on the southeast corner. The Chevy Equinox spun around facing almost the opposite direction — from westbound to eastbound.

Police have no indicated the direction of travel of each vehicle before and after the crash.
