Police, firefighters and paramedics from Prospect Heights responded about 12:38 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2023 to a report of a fire in an electrical panel in a rear room at the Subway restaurant, 1209 North Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights.
Some firefighters and fire equipment were temporarily blocked by a freight train passing nearby the fire scene. When the first fire personnel arrived, they reported a haze at the rear exterior of the Subway restaurant. Firefighters confirmed that all employees and customers evacuated the restaurant, and then entered the back of the restaurant. Firefighters had to take extra precautions because of the report that an electrical panel was on fire. According to an apartment resident who lives to the east of the store, sparks and flames increased at the back of the store, and a commanding officer ordered firefighters out of the building. A MABAS Box Alarm was activated by about 12:50 p.m. (estimated time), and a Second Alarm was activated by about 1:38 p.m. (estimated time). Smoke was diminished before the Second Alarm, and was the Second Alarm was probably activated primarily to rotate crews in the hot weather environment.
An Investigator’s Box was activated about 2:00 p.m. (estimated time), and investigators were seen at the scene speaking with owner’s of nearby businesses by about 2:30 p.m.
WGN is reporting that officials said there were no injuries. A witness at the scene said they thought a firefighter was injured, but CARDINAL NEWS was unable to independently confirm that.
