Palatine Fire Department firefighters and paramedics responded about 5:12 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2023 to a report of a fire at 12A Dundee Quarter in Palatine. Palatine police officers arrived on the scene at 5:14 p.m. and reported smoke and fire coming from the building. The first Palatine Fire Department unit arrived on scene at 5:17 p.m. and confirmed a working fire in the roof of the 3-story condominium building in the Windhaven Condominium Complex. The initial fire crews deployed a hose line to the third floor and began an aggressive interior attack on the fire while other crews pulled down the ceiling to expose the fire above them in the attic space. Additional crews searched the building to confirm that there were no trapped residents.

As the wind-driven fire progressed, it spread across the shared attic space from 12A into the adjoining attic space of 12B Dundee Quarter. Hose lines were deployed into 12B in an attempt to extinguish the advancing fire while other fire crews searched for possible victims.

According to Palatine Fire Department, the fire department response was upgraded to a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) alarm at 5:47 p.m. which brought firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS) resources from multiple agencies in the surrounding area. At approximately 5:48 p.m. there was a rapid change in fire conditions and partial roof collapse that resulted in the separation of fire crews and a Mayday was called. Firefighters on the scene rapidly deployed a portable ground ladder to a firefighter on a third-floor balcony. The firefighter safely exited the balcony and the Mayday was canceled.

Firefighting operations continued for the next couple of hours and the fire was declared under control at 8:37 p.m. The MABAS Box Alarm was struck out at 10:05 p.m. Fire department crews remained on the scene until approximately 6:00 a.m., Monday morning to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

A total of twenty-two residential units were damaged by fire, smoke, and water and were declared uninhabitable Sunday until further notice. The Palatine Police Department and the Red Cross were on the scene to assist displaced residents in finding temporary shelter. The Salvation Army provided food, beverages, and warming kits for the firefighters.

No civilians or firefighters were injured during this incident.

Palatine Fire Department Investigators began work on the scene to investigate the cause and origin of this fire.

Damage estimates were not initially available.

The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment, or a condo. Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in the event of any fire. In an emergency, do not delay exiting the home to search for pets or any other belongings.

— Palatine Fire Department

The fire was fought by 60 firefighters staffing eight fire engines, three ladder trucks, and nine ambulances which responded to the scene along with nine command officers. During the incident, units from multiple fire departments stood by at multiple Palatine fire stations to provide coverage for any additional calls.
