Police, firefighters and paramedics from Monterey Park responded about 10:22 p.m. PT Saturday, January 21, 2023 to a report of shots fired at the Star Dance Studio, 122 West Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park.

UPDATE: The suspect in the Monterey Park mass shooting is dead. Tactical police officers found the male suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a white Chevy van, which the suspect used to flee the scene of a second shooting attempt in Alhambra. Citizens overcame the suspect during his second shooting attempt, and the suspect fled to Torrance, where he was stopped near a strip mall at Sepulveda Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard. During a barricade situation with the suspect inside the van, the suspect shot himself. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified the mass shooter as Huu Can Tran, age 72, and stated no other suspects were at large.

Star Dance Studio is a Chinese-owned ballroom dance studio near on West Garvey Avenue near Garfield Avenue in Monterey Park. After the shooting, the gunman fled the scene. Monterey Park police upon arrival discovered people evacuating the dance studio. Ten people were pronounced dead at the scene, and then victims were transported to local hospitals.

An image of the suspect was released on the official LA County Sheriff’s official Twitter account at 11:21 p.m. Initially, the Monterey Police Department did not specify what type of weapon was used, but media sources have indicated the suspect used a “high-powered assault rifle.” Sheriff Luna said Sunday afternoon that the weapon was not a high-powered assault rifle. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna also described the shooter as a “male Asian” with an age estimated between 30 to 50, 5’10”, 150 LBS. He was seen wearing a black leather jacket, beanie with red trim, and glasses. The initial release bulletin was at 11:18 a.m.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a second incident occurred at 10:39 p.m. in the block of 100 South Garfield Avenue in the city of Alhambra, which is about 2.5 miles away from the initial scene.

The second scene occurred at the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, 121 South Garfield Avenue in Alhambra. An armed offender reportedly entered the establishment 17 minutes after the Monterey Park shooting, but was disarmed by citizens with no injuries occurring, and fled in a white cargo van. Police located a van matching the description in Torrance, California. The van was stopped and tactical police units surrounded the white van for a barricaded subject situation.

As of 12:29 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff Luna said the situation involving a white van in Torrance is not confirmed to have involved the shooting suspect in Monterey Park. Tactical law enforcement entered the van just before 1:00 p.m. PT. Torrance, California is about 27 miles from Monterey Park.

Sheriff Luna said authorities were withholding the name of the suspect because release of his name might hinder the suspect’s apprehension.
