One Dead in Extra-Alarm Fire in High-Rise Apartment on South Lake Park Ave Chicago

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded about 10:06 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2023 to a report of a high-rise apartment building fire at 4850 South Lake Park Chicago — Harper Square Co-Operative.

One person was found dead in the apartment on the 15th floor where firefighters believe the fire started, according to Ald. Sophia King. At least six other people were injured (Code Yellow and Code Green for two initially). One of the injured is listed in serious condition. A lot of seniors live in the building, but the apartment building is not a senior-only building. Firefighters report two people sustained injuries and are getting medical treatment from the EMS Plan 1 response. Two additional ambulances were requested to the scene above the EMS Plan 1 response.

All ambulance crews on scene were assigned to respond to the lobby with equipment.

Residents were being rescued from apartments above the initial fire floors, which may be the 15th floor and 16th floor. Residents were being rescued from floors 17 through 25.

Fire out on the 15th floor, and the fire reported under control by 10:40 a.m. according to Chicago Fire Media on Twitter, but a fire was later reported on the 22nd floor. Also, video at the scene showed fire damage or flames from the 15th floor to the 24th floor. Heavy flames were visible from the outside of floors 21 through 24.
