Ilan Gibori, who is accused of sexually assaulting a female student he met while working at Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove, has tampered with his ankle monitor and left his Vernon Hills home, according to the Lake County Sheriffs Office. Lake County pre-trial services was notified regarding the tampering of his ankle monitor, and when police came to check on him at his residence, they discovered he was gone. A Lake County judge issued an arrest warrant for Ilan Gibori, who is facing 25 felony counts of criminal sexual assault and now possible additional charges, on Friday, November 25, 2022.

Gibori attempted to flee previously in 2021 before he was captured in Texas.

Ilan Gibori, then a 46-year old Vernon Hills resident, was arrested Thursday, March 25, 2021 by the Department of Homeland Security at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport while allegedly attempting to evade a Lake County arrest warrant for criminal sexual assault charges.

Facing the 25 felony counts of criminal sexual assault in 2021, Gibori’s bond was set at $2 million, and he posted the necessary 10%, or $200,000, and was released on bond on the condition he would wear an ankle monitor.

On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, the Vernon Hills Police Department received information from the Department of Children and Family Services that Gibori had sexually assaulted a minor victim on numerous occasions over a period of several years. A preliminary investigation determined Gibori met the victim while he was a teacher at Cooper Middle School in Buffalo Grove in 2017.

Gibori left Cooper Middle School in July 2019 and then worked at The House Tutoring Lounge in Glencoe.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office worked with the Vernon Hills Police Department to quickly obtain an arrest warrant for Gibori. A State’s Attorney’s investigator notified Homeland Security Investigations at O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth airports to locate and apprehend Gibori based on the warrant.

Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart applauded the joint efforts of law enforcement.

“Bringing this fleeing suspect to justice would not have happened without the incredible efforts and rapid response from our law enforcement partners — the Department of Children and Family Services, the Children’s Advocacy Center attorneys and staff, Homeland Security Investigations – O’Hare/Dallas Fort Worth, and State’s Attorney’s Office investigators,” State’s Attorney Rinehart said. “The people of Lake County are safer today because of their teamwork.”

Gibori awaited extradition to Illinois, and was later charged in Illinois with the multiple counts of criminal sexual assault.

Vernon Hills Chief of Police Patrick L. Kreis Stated, “We are very troubled by these allegations but applaud the courage of the victim. Our investigators worked quickly with the Lake County State’s Attorney and the Department of Homeland Security to secure a warrant, locate and apprehend Gibori.”

As this matter is subject to on-going investigation, any parent of a student of Gibori is encouraged to speak with their child.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact the Vernon Hills Police Department Investigations Unit at 847-247-4891.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
