4 People Shot, 3 Dead on School Street in Portage Park, Chicago

Police, fighters and paramedics responded about 2:26 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2022 to a report of multiple people shot in the block of 5500 West School Street in Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood.

The shooting was connected to a fight inside a bar near Central Avenue and School Street before the shootings occurred in the street. The given address is about one block east of the block of 3200 North Central Avenue — near the intersection of Central Avenue and School Street.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the victims were standing on the street with a group of people when a male offender fired shots and fled in a dark-colored SUV.




A 50 year-old male sustained gunshot wounds to the head and chest and was pronounced on scene.

A 26 year-old male was transported by Chicago Fire Department paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Mt. Sinai Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A 24 year-old female was transported by Chicago Fire Department paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Mt. Sinai with gunshot wounds to the body and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A 25 year-old female was transported by Chicago Fire Department paramedics to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head, and is listed in critical condition.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased victims as Ricky Vera, a male age 50; Mario Pozuelos, a male age 26; and Mercedes Tavares, a female age 24.

There are no suspects in custody and Area Five detectives are investigating.
