Mt Prospect Police: Homeowner Let Dog Out on Driveway, Found Thief Trying to Steal His Vehicle Before Shots Fired

Police from Mount Prospect responded about 6:15 a.m. Thursday, November 17, 2022 a report of shots fired on I Oka Avenue near Busse Avenue, just west of downtown Mount Prospect.

The Mount Prospect Police Department at 4:30 p.m. released additional details about the shots fired incident, including a description of one of the two offenders, and a vehicle description.

Mount Prospect Police are looking for a dark colored SUV with a horizontal singular taillight after a resident interrupted an attempt at stealing a car. The incident happened just after 6 A.M. this morning in the block of 100 block of South I Oka Avenue. The SUV fled the area northbound on I Oka Avenue to Prospect Avenue. Shots were fired but no one was seriously injured.




Officers responded to 911 calls of shots fired and learned the victim at that address went to let his dog out when he interrupted an offender attempting to steal a vehicle in his driveway. After the victim inquired what the offender was doing, the offender ran to an awaiting dark colored SUV, being driven by another person.

One of the offenders is described as a Black male, thin build, wearing a white colored shirt or sweater and red- or orange-colored pants or shorts.

During the attempted theft, one of the offenders produced a firearm and began firing multiple shots in the direction of the victim. The victim dove for cover and the offenders fled the area in the dark colored SUV northbound from the scene towards Prospect Avenue. The victim was not struck by any bullets, but suffered minor injuries while diving for cover that were treated at the scene by the Mount Prospect Fire Department.




Mount Prospect Police Crime Scene Technicians recovered multiple 9mm shell casings at the scene and found damage on the garage of the residence consistent with being struck by bullets. Physical evidence from scene was collected and will be sent to the forensic lab for analysis.

The investigation into this aggravated discharge of a firearm continues and anyone with information or video footage that might assist with the investigation is asked to contact the Mount Prospect Police Department Investigations Section at 847-870-5654.

Mount Prospect Police Department advised that members of the community should not confront anyone who is breaking into their vehicle or attempting to steal it, and recommended instead that members of the community should get to a safe place and call 911 immediately.

Within 90 minutes of arriving on the scene of the shots fired incident, the Mount Prospect Police Department alerted the community that a shots fired incident occurred on I Oka Avenue, that they were investigating, and that they would update the community.
