National Night Out on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2022 involved a real demonstration of skill and speedy reactions when Arlington Heights Police Officer Treston Schoeny immediately reacted to the need to help a choking victim with an obstructed airway. A 7 year-old boy, Colin Connolly, who was attending National Night Out, was suddenly choking on a piece of candy.

While participating in the annual National Night Out event at North School Park, Officer Treston Schoeny observed a commotion in the crowd a short distance from where he was standing. Officer Schoeny noticed Colin Connolly was choking, and could not breathe. Officer Schoeny, without hesitation, administered the Abdominal Thrusts (formerly known as the Heimlich Maneuver) and was able to dislodge a piece of candy that was obstructing Colin’s airway.

The lifesaving action was captured on a police body-worn camera, and shows the quick reaction and life-saving response of Officer Treston Schoeny.

At the Village Board Meeting on Monday, October 17th, Officer Schoeny was presented a Commendation Award for his heroic actions by Mayor Tom Hayes. Colin Connelly, and his parents were also present at the village board meeting. Colin’s father, Neil Connolly is an officer with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Acting Director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection Area Port of Chicago Kemisha Sherrell also attended the Village Board meeting to offer her gratitude, saying she was forever grateful that Police Officer Treston Schoeny was there when a member of her staff and his family member needed Treston Schoeny the most. Commendation from U.S. Customs Border Protection, of which Colin Connolly’s father, Neil, is an Officer.

Several police officers, firefighters, and paramedics rushed to the scene of the call for help, and Police Officer Treston Schoeny was the first to get into position for Abdominal Thrusts on Eastman Street near Evergreen Avenue in Arlington Heights, and successfully perform the lifesaving technique.

There’s no surprise that Police Officer Treston Schoeny was the one of a number of capable Arlington Heights police officers that took quick responsive action to save a life. Schoeny is alway receptive, responsive and outgoing whether on any type of police call in Arlington Heights, or whether on patrol.
