Rolling Meadows Dad Thomas Dobosz Dies from Tragic Crash on I-90 in Southwest McHenry County

Thomas Dobosz, age 32, died Wednesday morning, August 3, 2022 at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood following injuries he suffered about 2:11 a.m. Sunday, July 31, 2022.

Killed at the crash scene were Lauren Dobosz, age 31, and her children Emma, Lucas, Nicholas and Ella … and friend Kat, who was traveling with the family in a blue Chevrolet van that was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver in an Acura TSX. The driver of the Acura TSX was identified as Jennifer Fernandez, a 22-year-old female of Carpentersville, Illinois. She died in her Acura TSX as both vehicles became engulfed in flames.




Initially, six Rolling Meadows residents lost their lives in the motor vehicle crash on I-90 in southwest McHenry County. The victims included Lauren Dobosz, a 31-year-old mother, and her four children – a 13-year-old girl, a 7-year-old boy, a 6-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl — along with a friend of the family, a 13-year-old girl.

Thomas Dobosz, who is father of four of the children killed, and husband to Lauren, was the only survivor of the crash. Thomas Dobosz had been listed in critical condition. He suffered severe burns, but managed to get out of the van on his own. A nurse, who happened to be at the scene provided aid before paramedics arrived. A medevac helicopter landed on I-90 to transport him directly from the landing zone on I-90 in southwest McHenry County to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. His death this morning brings the death toll of Rolling Meadows residents to seven, and the total death toll of the crash to eight.




The City of Rolling Meadows and the Rolling Meadows Police Department announced Monday afternoon, August 1, 2022 that a fundraiser “RMPD Hope Fund” was established for the I-90 crash victims that were injured or killed on Sunday, July 31st, 2022, at approximately 2:11 a.m.

To help offset costs related to this tragic accident, the City of Rolling Meadows Hope Fund is officially accepting donations on behalf of these local families.

As of August 1st, 2022 and until further notice, all funds donated through the RMPD Hope Fund will be given directly to the Rolling Meadows families of the I-90 crash victims.
