Police: Highland Park Shooter Robert E. Crimo III Contemplated Mass Shooting in Madison

In a press conference about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2022, Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Covelli (Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman) said Robert E. Crimo III contemplated a mass shooting in Madison when he learned of a 4th of July celebration being held in Madison, Wisconsin. He had 60 rounds left, but he did not carry out the shooting in Madison because he didn’t feel prepared.

Police do not initially know why Crimo III returned to Illinois.

He disposed of his phone in Madison, Wisconsin.

The rifle was recovered on the ground. Police are seeking details from a witness who saw Crimo III dropped something in a red blanket.

All shooting was done on the roof.

Victim assistance is at Highland Park High School.

Assistant State’s Attorney Ben Dillon gave the information to the judge for the Bond Hearing. Crime III emptied the first clip, re-loaded a second clip and emptied it, and then possibly re-loaded a third clip.

Arraignment will likely be in August 2022. The next court date for Crimo III is late July 2022.

Attempted murder and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm charges for each person that was injured, and possibly for a number of people that were in the vicinity and targeted, but not wounded.
