On June 30, 2022, at approximately 8:45 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of Stonehaven Drive and Hearthmoor Court, Long Grove, for an unknown problem. As deputies responded, Sheriff’s 911 Telecommunicators received information that a 19-year-old man, of Buffalo Grove, was robbed and was being chased by two offenders.

The Lake County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to Long Grove arrived quickly and located the victim. The victim initially stated he was robbed on the walking path in a gated subdivision as he was walking to meet with some friends. However, as Lake County Sheriff’s deputies on the scene asked additional questions, the victim admitted he was going to meet two individuals to smoke cannabis. When he met with them, he was robbed by the people he was meeting.

Further investigation revealed shortly after meeting, Justin Sutherland, 18, a resident of the 4400 block of Pebble Creek Lane in the same gated neighborhood in Long Grove, brandished a knife and demanded the victim’s property. Another person with Sutherland, an unknown male between the ages of 16-18 years of age, brandished a firearm. Sutherland went through the victim’s pockets and stole various items. The victim was able to push away from Sutherland and the other offender and flee on foot.

Sheriff’s deputies made contact with Sutherland at his residence and recovered the victim’s stolen property, along with the knife and gun used in the attack. The gun was a metal BB gun, which looked like a real firearm. Sutherland was arrested and charged with armed robbery (class X felony) and aggravated robbery (class 2 felony). He is due to appear at an initial court hearing this morning.

Sheriff’s detectives are conducting follow-up investigation to determine the identity of Sutherland’s accomplice.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
