Police from Rolling Meadows, and firefighters and paramedics from Rolling Meadows and Palatine responded about 5:46 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2022 to a report of a commercial building fire at 1051 Rohlwing Road in Rolling Meadows.

The first unit on arrival reported smoke showing from a single-story commercial building. An interior crew reported moderate gray and brown smoke all the way to the floor. A smoke header was visible from Northwest Highway and Wilke Road. The fire department response was upgraded to a “Working Fire (Code 4)” about 5:50 a.m.

For the Working Fire response, additional units from Rolling Meadows were assigned, and an Engine was assigned from Arlington Heights Fire Department, and an Engine was assigned from Inverness Fire Protection District (formerly known as the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District). Also, an ambulance was assigned from Arlington Heights and a second Palatine ambulance was assigned — added to the initial auto-aid response that included an ambulance from Palatine Fire Department.

Smoke was also pushing out the front door of at least one neighboring unit in the commercial building. Initially firefighters had to force at least one neighboring door because the unit (commercial space) where the fire originated was not confirmed. Firefighters then attempted to find and use keys to access additional commercial spaces in the building.

The fire was declared knocked within about 20 to 22 minutes of dispatch. Firefighters immediately worked on ventilation to clear smoke from all commercial unit spaces in the commercial building. Heat and smoke conditions were reported to be persistent about 30 minutes after the call was dispatched, and an interior crew requested help for ventilation.

An additional engine and an additional truck were assigned at 6:10 a.m. to help rotate crews, work on ventilation, check for extension, and work on overhaul.

Rohlwing Road was closed between the south end of the Harvest Bible Church parking lot and Carnegie Street. Edison Place, a street to the south of the fire scene, was also closed near the fire scene. Rolling Meadows police officers also assisted with pedestrian traffic nearby, and also helped neighboring employees, who were affected by getting to work due to area road closures.

The information in this article is an early report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities.
