Vehicles at 3 Dealerships Damaged

Schaumburg police received a report about 12:30 AM Thursday April 14, 2022 of criminal damage to vehicles at Schaumburg Honda Automobiles, 750 East Golf Road Schaumburg, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender was criminally damaging vehicles in the parking lot at the dealership.
Police arrived on the scene immediately, and were able to apprehend a suspect at some point after the damage occurred. CBS Chicago’s Mugo Odigwe reported later on Thursday that the offender was arrested while he was damaging vehicles at another dealership.
An initial report from Schaumburg Police Department indicated that about 80 vehicles were damaged. This report was preliminary before a precise account was tallied in daylight Thursday morning. Shattered windows in at least 12 vehicles were visible at night from the sidewalk along Golf Road in front of the dealership.
Schaumburg police were on the scene overnight with an Evidence Technician gathering evidence and taking photographs for the criminal damage to property case. Many of the vehicle windows damaged were rear windows located in a front parking lot that faces Golf Road just west of Plum Grove Road.

CBS Chicago reported later Thursday that vehicles at dealerships at Patrick BMW and the Ford dealership across the street were also damaged. Schaumburg Honda Automobiles General Manager Matthew Ashford said 83 vehicles were damaged at the Honda dealership. Sixty-three of the vehicles involved his own inventory, and at least some of the other vehicles were customers’ vehicles located at the property for service.
Recently multiple vehicle windows were randomly damaged at multiple locations in nearby suburban Rolling Meadows. Initially there was no confirmation whether the Schaumburg suspect is also a suspect in the Rolling Meadows crimes, or whether Schaumburg police and Rolling Meadows police are working together to investigate a connection.
There are numerous private security personnel working at auto dealerships across the northwest suburbs and Chicagoland, especially overnight. Some security personnel are highly visible with marked security vehicles with emergency lights activated patrolling dealership properties. Other armed security personnel are operating under cover and are armed.
Many police departments have also concentrated patrols near dealerships as the dealerships have been under attack by auto thieves that burglarize and/or steal autos from dealerships. The stolen vehicles, with no identifiable connections with criminals, are then used to commit a variety of other types of crimes in Chicagoland, or elsewhere. The criminals often flee police in the stolen vehicles with little or no concern of the vehicles being traced to the criminals’ identities.
Initially it is unknown whether the criminal damage is part of a coordinated attack of criminals, an isolated or target attack of retaliation, or a random incident.
The criminal damage crime is reported to have occurred around 12:30 a.m.
