Sacramento Mass Shooting Believed to Be a Drive-by

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Sacramento and the California Highway Patrol responded about 2:00 a.m. Sunday, April 3, 2022, to a mass shooting near K Street and 10th Street in the downtown district of Sacramento, California. Some police officers assigned in the area heard the gunshots and responded to the direction of the shots heard.




Police and paramedics discovered six people with mortal gunshot wounds suffered in the shooting. Another twelve victims suffered were also wounded by gunshots or injured fleeing. Four of the wounded were transported to UC Davis Medical Center, and a fifth was transported to Sutter Hospital.

Among the fatalities, three victims were men and three victims were women.




Initially, no suspects were in police custody. The mass shooting, including the dozens wounded, is the worst shooting in Sacramento history, and the second mass shooting in Sacramento in five weeks.

Sunday’s downtown shooting occurred about two blocks north of the California State Capitol building and about four blocks east of the Golden 1 Center arena — the home of the NBA Sacramento Kings. The California State Capitol is located about three blocks south of the crime scene.




According to Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester, investigators did not initially connect the shooting to a particular venue or event. She also said there was a fight immediately prior to the shooting, and that there were multiple shooters.

A Twitter, a video showed people running down the street while rapid gunfire was heard in the background. Another Twitter video showed a large group of people surrounding two people fighting when gunfire was heard. A video from Public Safety News (PSN) showed victims down on the sidewalk bleeding and/or treated with CPR by police officers and paramedics (See PSN video and shooting videos on CARDINAL NEWS PublicSafetyReporter.com).

Immediately after the shooting, Sacramento police and the California Highway Patrol closed the area with a perimeter within 9th Street to 13th Street, and L to J Streets. Investigators recovered a stolen handgun from the scene. The ATF was called in to assist the Sacramento Police Department in the investigation.
