Bloomfield Township — Firefighters worked Thursday, Feb. 17 to put out a massive blaze that ripped through the clubhouse at Oakland Hills Country Club, a historic golf facility that has hosted major golf championships and was positioned to host major tournaments in the coming decade. Police and firefighters from Bloomfield Township responded about 9:17 a.m. Thursday, February 17, 2022 to a report of an odor of smoke at the clubhouse along with an activated fire alarm located at 3951 West Maple Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. There was a roof collapse by 11:00 a.m.

The fire was quickly elevated to a 3rd Alarm.

Firefighters from Bloomfield Township, Farmington Hills, Rochester Hills, Southfield, Madison Heights, Waterford, Birmingham-Franklin were assigned to the fire.

Bloomfield Township Fire Chief John Leroy said the entire center of the building sustained extensive damage. The clubhouse, restaurant, kitchen and offices are located in the center of the building. Chief said it was difficult to find the seat of the fire. Smoke conditions progressed and soon the fire was detected in the attic running all the way across the building.

Fire Chief Leroy said strong north winds were not helping the firefighting operations, and that there were water main issues.




The building is the second largest wood frame building in the State of Michigan. The building is approximately 500 feet by 100 feet. Bloomfield Hills is a small suburban city about 20 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan. Firefighters from Bloomfield Township protect the small suburban city of Bloomfield Hills.

The Oakland Hills Country Club is one of the most prestigious courses in Michigan and has hosted six U.S. Open Championships, three PGA Championships, and the 2004 Ryder Cup.

Maple Road was closed between Telegraph Road and Lahser Road in Bloomfield Hills.

The fire was still burning as of 5 p.m. The began just before a winter storm arrived. Most of the building and memorabilia have been destroyed, but some items were retrieved by firefighters.

Winds were from the North and Northeast 9 to 15 MPH and gusting 22 to 28 MPH.




A Winter Storm Warning was activated for the Detroit area including Bloomfield Hills from 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2022 until 3:00 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2022 with peak snowfall rates occurring between 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Snow accumulation is forecast to total 4 to 8 inches. Ice accumulations are also possible, but the worst accumulations are expected well south of the fire scene — south of I-94.
