A large volcanic eruption occurred near the Tonga Islands at 8:27 PM PST on Friday, January 14, 2022. Therefore a Tsunami Advisory is in effect for all coastal areas of the western United States.

Widespread inundation is NOT expected; however, a tsunami is capable of producing strong currents that may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures. The strong currents are expected, according to the National Weather Service Office warnings and reports gathered from NWS San Francisco Bay Area, National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA, and the NWS National Tsunami Warning Center Palmer, Alaska.

Initially, no injuries were reported in Tonga.

A large eruption began on January 14, 2022 with clouds of ash reaching 20 kilometers (12 mi) high into the atmosphere, according to Radio New Zealand. The government of Tonga issued a tsunami warning to residents. Tongan geologists near the volcano observed explosions and a 5-kilometre (3.1 mi) wide ash column, according to Matangi Tonga Online.

A second, larger volcano eruption occurred on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at about 4:00 UTC with a reported deafening sound and a rain of small black stones and black ashes, according to Kaniva Tonga News. TV reports also reported the smell of sulfur in the area.

Tonga, officially named the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian country and also an archipelago consisting of 169 islands located northeast of New Zealand and east-northeast of Australia. Thirty-six of the islands are inhabited with a population of 100,209, according to the 2021 Census.
