Wind damage and hazards incidents beginning about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2021 for Arlington Heights and nearby municipalities, including some Chicagoland incidents. Note, there were multiple reports of smoke or burning odor from about 2:30 a.m. to 4:45 a.m. throughout multiple north and northwest suburban communities.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2021

08:43 PM — Tree down on a house and car in block of 300 Cedar Circle Court, Streamwood.

8:51 PM — O’HARE WIND S29 G46 MPH, 64°F

8:59 PM — Branch on a power line with initial arcing near Palatine Road and Clyde Avenue. Palatine firefighters report no hazard, but a large area along Palatine Road without power — near Marion Jordan Elementary School.




09:15 PM — Plum Grove Road and Higgins Road power pole hanging over the roadway.

09:21 PM — Dangerous coping at a Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in Chicago, 259 North Columbus. Very large overhang with serious hazard. Strips of metal involved in hazard. Valet entrance/exit to hotel blocked for safety of people below. 300×35 foot overhang with strips of metal that are undulating and falling at random.

09:22 PM — Report of two transformers that “blew” with a pole leaning over Central Road … stoplights out at New Wilke and White Oak Street. Central Road is blocked between Old Wilke Road and New Wilke Road.

09:24 PM — Several apartment buildings without power in the area near Algonquin Road and Weber Drive (Old Wilke).

09:34 PM — Boston Market, 1000 South Elmhurst Mount Prospect with smoke filling the restaurant from the electric room. Customers and staff evacuated the restaurant. NO FIRE SHOWING/situation stable.

09:51 PM — O’HARE WIND S29 G60 MPH, 63°F

09:57 PM — 700 block of See Gwun Avenue in Mount Prospect, issue with a transformer. Boom and a flash of light from block of 700 South We-Go Trail in Mount Prospect.




10:27 PM — 15551 West Rockland Road Libertyville. Tree down across Rockland Road, and a crashed into the downed tree with power lines down also. Rockland Road is completely blocked.

10:37 PM — McHenry Road and Pauline Avenue in Buffalo Grove. Blown transformer in the area.

10:43 PM — Route 45 and Grass Lake Lindenhurst. Wires down.

10:45 PM — Route 45 and Milburn Road Lindenhurst. A blue flash and then a grass fire.

10:51 PM — O’HARE WIND S37 G59 MPH, 65°F




11:00 PM — Problem with a power line from pole to house in the block of 2000 Martin Lane in Rolling Meadows.

11:03 PM — 21st and Kenosha Road in Zion. Lines down involving a tow truck.

11:13 PM — Mulberry Court and Mayfair power line arcing. Trampoline wrapped around a primary line in the backyard between Mulberry Court, Mayfair Lane and Bernard Drive.

11:20 PM — Block of 800 South Elm Street in Mount Prospect. Power line down in the backyard.

11:20 PM — Block 1200 Milida Court in Arlington Heights. Utility pole leaning on a fence. Firefighters report a utility pole is severed at the base. If it falls it will hit a house.

11:25 PM — Hazard in block of 2200 West Nichols Road in Arlington Heights.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2021

12:09 AM — Block of 1400 Mayfield Lane in Schaumburg. Firefighters report one primary line down in the backyard, and one line tangled up in the trees.

12:24 AM — Knightsbridge Lane and Churchill Road in Schaumburg. Unknown.

12:30 AM — Block of 200 Camel Bend Court in Schaumburg. Tree uprooted and leaning on a house; firefighters checking for structural damage. Firefighters report no significant damage to the house.

12:49 AM — Extra Alarm fire at commercial building at 4328 United Parkway Schiller Park. MABAS Division 21 Box Alarm Box #100 activated at 1:05 AM.

12:51 AM — O’HARE WIND S28 G45 MPH, 64°F




1:17 AM — Higgins and Morningside Drive in Schaumburg. A utility pole down with arcing, and grass starting on fire.

01:51 AM — O’HARE WIND S26 G44 MPH, 65°F




2:27 AM — Unknown Wilmette

2:32 AM — Block of 800 Post Lane in Streamwood. Tree down and power line arcing. Firefighters report a large tree down on primary lines (?), the secondary lines and the service line to a residence … no longer arcing. ComEd notified.

2:33 AM — Riverwoods Police Department, 845 Saunders Road. Arcing power line. Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters report pole-to-pole power lines arcing.

2:43 AM — Block of 600 Trace Drive at Buffalo Ridge Apartments. Smell of something burning.

2:47 AM — Block of 1400 Brownstone Court in Mount Prospect. Transformer explosion.

02:51 AM — O’HARE WIND S23 G47 MPH, 65°F

2:56 AM — Crestview Terrace and St Mary’s Parkway in Buffalo Grove. Arcing at a utility pole.




03:26 AM — Block of 1400 Quaker Lane in Prospect Heights. Smoke in the area.

03:28 AM — Block of 2400 Partridge Lane in Northbrook. Smoke in the area.

03:31 AM — Block of 100 Sunset Place in Lake Bluff. Power lines sparking.

03:38 AM — Block of 1200 West Northwest Highway in Palatine. Odor of smoke in the air. Nothing found.

03:40 AM — Block 300 Mashpee Lane. Backyard filled with smoke. Firefighters report there is an odor of smoke throughout the town.

03:40 AM — Block of 1400 Walters Avenue in Northbrook. Transformer fire.

03:41 AM — Block of 500 Ridge Avenue Elk Grove Village. Smell of smoke in the air, unknown source.

03:46 AM — Block of 23600 North Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills. Smoke in the area.

03:47 AM — Block of 2100 South Tonne Drive in Arlington Heights. Odor of smoke smelled in the bathroom in the apartment.

03:49 AM — Block of 300 Park Drive in Northbrook. Outside odor of smoke. Firefighters smelled smoke as soon as they opened the door at the fire station.

03:51 AM — O’HARE WIND S26 G54 MPH, 61°F

03:54 AM — Block of 8800 Robin Drive in unincorporated Des Plaines. Smoke in the area.

03:58 AM — Block of 200 Burlington Circle at Northgate Crossing in Wheeling. Smoke in the area.




04:00 AM — North Maine firefighters report Moon has an orangish color and speculate smoke is from upper air flow from somewhere else.

04:05 AM — Dee Road and Talcott Road in Park Ridge.

4:09 AM — Block of 1300 Hillside Road in Northbrook. Transformer fire.

04:11 AM — Block of 100 Laurel Avenue in Highland Park. Strong smell of smoke in the area.

04:14 AM — Block of 1500 Cloverdale in Highland Park. Strong smell of smoke in the area with haze.

04:14 AM — Firefighters from Lake Forest report they have the same issue throughout Lake Forest and Lake Bluff.

04:16 AM — Block of 700 South Wolf Road in Des Plaines. Outside odor of smoke. Firefighters report a slight odor of smoke from an unknown source; speculate the smoke odor might be from the Box Alarm south of Des Plaines (in Schiller Park).

4:25 AM — Block of 1700 Wilmot Road in Bannockburn. Smoke in the area. RED Center dispatch reports all fire departments have been chasing reports of odor of smoke in the area.

4:45 AM — Block of 0-99 Logan Loop in Highland Park. Smell of smoke in the basement, unknown source.
