The Amazon Fresh store at 325 East Palatine Road in Arlington Heights took on the look of the exterior style of an Amazon Fresh store the past two weeks, as construction workers completed some of the final touches on the exterior facade at the front of the store during the last week of November and the first week of December 2021.

The initial interior demolition work, a new roof, and preparation for build-out of a new Amazon Fresh store began one year ago (October and November 2020) at the Town & Country retail space of the former Dominick’s store, but the purpose of the construction work was not initially confirmed by officials. Last year, a representative at the Village of Arlington Heights Building & Life Safety Department confirmed the space at 325 East Palatine Road had a permit for demolition, but stated there was no known business preparing to occupy the space.

By November 20, 2021 is was clear that the Amazon Fresh grocery store is moving toward completion. Upright food cases with shelving and glass doors have been placed in aisles inside the store.

In December 2020 an unnamed grocery store at 325 East Palatine Road was announced by the Village of Arlington Heights. A non-disclosure agreement prohibited announcement in December 2020 that the store was an Amazon Fresh store, but the December 2020 announcement did reveal that the projected store opening for the unnamed grocery store was June 2022.

For months prior to “Grand Opening” of a set of the first Amazon Fresh stores in the country, each store functioned as a so-called “Dark Store” that fulfilled orders, but did not allow the public to shop inside the store. This apparently was Amazon’s adaptation to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. It’s unknown at this time if the Arlington Heights store will initially open as a “Dark Store.”

Perhaps the Amazon Fresh store is ahead of the announced projected opening, and will open before June 2022.
