The crash scene was located just west of the bridge over Nippersink Lake where the Lake County Sheriff Marine Unit is also stationed nearby on Riverside Island Drive.
Route 12 (US-12) was closed in both directions until about 4:30 p.m. for an extended crash investigation. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was assigned to the scene to assist with the investigation by the Fox Lake Police Department.
The initial investigation indicates that the driver of a black Dodge SUV was following a Toyota sedan northbound on US-12 WEST. When the driver of the Toyota sedan slowed down to turn into a driveway, the driver of the Dodge SUV swerved into the oncoming southbound lane(s) to avoid a crash with the Toyota, and instead crashed head-on with a silver Jeep SUV that was southbound on US-12 EAST. Both the Dodge SUV and the Jeep SUV had severe front-end damage.
US-12 is two lanes in each direction with a left turn lane from southbound US-12 EAST to northeastbound Riverside Island Drive.
The Fox Lake Police Department urges anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Fox Lake Police Department at 847-587-3100.
