Fatal Rollover Crash on I-90 WEST at Milepost 26.75 in Boone County, Secondary Crash Kills Another

SECONDARY MAJOR CRASH AT I-90 ROAD BLOCK AT ROUTE 23 NEAR HAMPSHIRE

Illinois State Police, Boone County Sheriff’s deputies, LifeLine paramedics and firefighters and paramedics from Boone County Fire Protection District #2 responded about 3:16 a.m. Saturday, October 02, 2021 to a report of a serious crash with entrapment involving a truck and a passenger vehicle on I-90 WEST at Milepost 26.75 in Boone County.




Illinois State Police on arrival discovered a vehicle in the right ditch and a red semitrailer truck on the left shoulder with debris covering all lanes. One person was reported dead at the scene in the vehicle off the right shoulder. A passenger was also injured in that vehicle. The crash involved a black Honda Civic and a red Volvo Truck Tractor. The truck driver was not injured.

All westbound lanes were shut down at Illinois Route 23 and were allowed to re-enter I-90 west at Genoa Road.




Honda Civic driver Adrian Reyes-Marin, a 36-year-old male from Rockford, Illinois was pronounced dead at the scene, according to initial reports. Honda passenger Tracy Aarli, a 40-year-old female from Rockford, Illinois was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

Truck driver Abdishakur Musa, a 31-year-old male from Savage, Michigan did not initially report any injuries. Truck passenger Yussof Musa, a 27-year-old male from Savage, Michigan did not initially report any injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the red Volvo truck tractor was traveling west in the center lane of Interstate 90 WEST near milepost 26.75. The driver of the Honda Civic was also traveling west, behind the truck. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Honda Civic struck the rear of the truck. After the impact, the Honda Civic left the road to the right, struck an embankment and rolled over. The truck also left the road to the right, struck the embankment and a sign pole. The driver of the Honda Civic was transported by ambulance to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased, according to the Illinois State Police. The passenger in the Honda Civic was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of traveling in the truck reported no injuries. All westbound lanes were closed and traffic was being diverted onto Route 23, according to Illinois State Police.

A secondary crash occurred about 5:49 a.m. at I-90 WEST and Illinois Route 23 when the driver of a vehicle hit a Tollway HELP truck blocking for the primary I-90 crash. The vehicle burst into flames when it hit the tollway maintenance truck. A male victim was still in the vehicle while the vehicle was fully engulfed with fire. The driver crashed into the back of the tollway truck at the offramp from I-90 to Illinois Route 23. While the driver was unable to get out of his vehicle, the vehicle exploded at about 5:52 a.m.




Hampshire firefighters responded to the secondary crash, and reported one victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The HELP truck driver was standing outside the truck when the crash occurred. The HELP truck driver reported he was not physically injured, but was shaken up.

Initially there were no official details from the Illinois State Police regarding the victim or the victim’s vehicle involved in the secondary crash at I-90 and Illinois Route 23. A Crash Reconstruction Officer (CRO) was called to both the primary crash scene and the secondary crash scene.
